Statement

As someone deeply rooted in the traditions of Persian calligraphy and immersed in its beauty throughout my life, I have embarked on a journey to bridge past and present, tradition and innovation. I was born and raised in Iran, surrounded by the elegance of Persian script. Later, I found myself in Portugal—a place where the alphabet I had known since childhood was unfamiliar to most. This cultural shift inspired me to reimagine my artistic expression. In my new collection, I use Persian letters and words not as tools for direct communication, but as visual elements that evoke entire worlds of imagination. The letters and words transform each piece into scenes and emotions open to visual interpretation. This collection is not meant to be read or deciphered. The works invite viewers to experience calligraphy as form, movement, and texture. The familiar curves and flow of Persian script become a universal event—a visual language that transcends its origins while still honoring them. As viewers walk through these imaginary spaces, I hope they reconnect with their own emotions and dreams, discovering moments of stillness, joy, and longing. Somayeh Gholami August 2025
